The internal clock does not keep time on its own account; it is corrected daily against the outside world. Light is the signal that does the correcting, through a pathway separate from the one that produces vision.
A separate retinal pathway carries the signal
Alongside the cells responsible for vision, the retina contains a small population of cells containing a pigment sensitive to short-wavelength, blue-toned light.
These project directly to the clock region of the brain rather than to visual areas, so they report ambient light conditions rather than contributing to images.
Their existence explains why some people with no functional vision still maintain a normally entrained rhythm.
Timing determines the direction of the shift
The same light produces opposite effects depending on when it arrives. Exposure in the hours after waking advances the clock, making sleep and waking occur earlier.
Exposure in the late evening delays it, pushing sleep timing later, which is the mechanism behind difficulty falling asleep after a bright evening.
There is also a window in the middle of the biological night where light produces the largest shifts, which is relevant to shift work and travel.
Intensity differences outdoors are larger than they look
The eye adapts so effectively that indoor and outdoor lighting feel comparable, while the actual intensity outdoors is greater by orders of magnitude.
Ordinary indoor lighting is dim from the clock's perspective, which means many people receive a weak resetting signal during the day.
A weak daytime signal makes the clock more susceptible to being pushed around by evening light.
The evening screen question is more nuanced than usual
Screens do emit short-wavelength light, but their intensity is low compared with daylight, and the effect on timing is correspondingly modest.
Room lighting often contributes more total exposure than the device, and what is done on the device affects alertness independently of its light output.
Treating the screen as the sole variable overstates one factor while ignoring the ambient lighting and the engagement it produces.
The practical version is about contrast
What the clock responds to is the difference between day and night, so increasing daytime brightness matters as much as reducing it in the evening.
Morning outdoor light is the strongest single lever available, and it is stronger than any indoor arrangement can substitute for.
Where a rhythm is persistently misaligned despite this, particularly in shift work, that is a clinical question with established approaches rather than a matter of habit.
