Advice on how much water to drink has swung between fixed daily quotas and the instruction to simply follow thirst. The instability comes from the fact that the underlying need genuinely varies while advice has to be simple enough to remember.
The body regulates fluid continuously
Sensors monitor the concentration of the blood and adjust how much water the kidneys return to circulation. That adjustment happens throughout the day without any conscious involvement.
Thirst is the second lever, triggered when concentration rises past a set point. For most healthy adults these two systems maintain fluid balance within a narrow range.
A fixed daily target is therefore competing with a control system that already has better information than any number printed on a bottle.
Requirements vary more than advice can capture
A person's need depends on body size, activity, air temperature, humidity, altitude and what they have eaten. Two people in the same room can have quite different requirements on the same day.
Food contributes a substantial share of daily fluid intake, and fruit, vegetables and soups contribute a great deal of it. Advice that counts only what is drunk ignores that contribution.
Any single number is an average across an enormous range, which is why it rarely fits the person reading it.
The familiar quotas have thin origins
The most quoted daily figures trace back to general estimates of total water needs that explicitly included water contained in food. The food clause dropped away as the number was repeated.
Once a number is short and memorable it circulates independently of the reasoning that produced it. Later corrections travel far more slowly than the original claim.
This is a common pattern in health advice, where the memorable version outlives the qualified one.
Thirst is reliable in most situations and not in all
For healthy adults doing ordinary things, drinking to thirst tracks requirements well. The sensation is calibrated to concentration rather than to habit.
The signal becomes less reliable in older age, during prolonged heavy exertion, in significant heat, and during illness involving fever, vomiting or diarrhoea.
Those are the situations where deliberate drinking earns its place, and where a persistent problem is worth raising with a clinician rather than solving with a rule.
Overdoing it is a real if uncommon risk
Drinking far beyond need can dilute blood sodium faster than the kidneys can compensate. This is uncommon but genuinely dangerous, and it appears most often in endurance events.
The framing that more water is always better has no physiological basis. Beyond meeting the requirement, additional intake is simply additional urine.
The practical position is unglamorous: drink when thirsty, drink more deliberately in heat and exertion, and treat the fixed quota as a slogan rather than a standard.
