Environments that hold attention gently without requiring it — natural settings are the most studied case — appear to allow that capacity to recover more effectively.

This is the mechanism proposed for why a walk outdoors restores concentration more than an equivalent period sitting indoors does.

Passive rest can be actively unrestorative

Time spent scrolling or half-watching something delivers a continuous stream of small demands on attention while providing none of the conditions for recovery.

It reads as rest because the body is still and nothing is required, which is why it is chosen when depleted and why it disappoints so consistently.

The distinguishing question is not how much effort was involved but whether the specific depleted capacity was allowed to rebuild.

Recovery needs an interval, not just a moment

Most restoration processes take time to begin, so very short breaks end before the recovery they were meant to permit has started.

Fragmenting rest into many brief intervals therefore delivers less than the same total taken in fewer, longer blocks.

Persistent exhaustion that does not respond to adequate and well-matched rest is a clinical question rather than a scheduling one, and worth raising with a doctor.
